Welcoming a new guy to WoodFinn

9.1.2012

We had a new fella move in yesterday morning!
He's a red head, tall and very charming.
He has been a barrel racer in his past, as well as 3-Day event horse.

Introducing the newest addition to our farm:

'Rekka '
< aka "Rex">

Below is Dani leading him outside for his first turnout.

Down the lane they went, to the ring....

After a little walk-about to see stuff,

and seeing if He was going to be alright.....

She removed his lead and off he went.

He explored the whole ring, from end to end

Did some posing for the camera...

Such a Handsome fella...

Bailey thought he looked pretty fine !

He checked out Sunny, Scarlet and Alli...
Then across the fields to see Holly and Bailey grazing.

Sheesh, Another  pose- he really IS quite handsome, don't ya think ?

Finally some grazing .

nom, nommmmm.....

  nom,nom,nommm.....

We hope he will be a fine riding horse for the more advanced humans in our barn and be owned by one of our working students !

We want to personally thank Beverly Cataleno
 from Kennett Square, Pa.
for allowing us to own this wonderful Thoroughbred !

THANKS BEVERLY !!!!!

 The End.

Happy Labor Day & Crazy Chicken Lady Stories

9.3.2012
So, it is 'Labor Day'... a celebration across the USA for the passing of laws concerning the hard labor of those in our past .

We celebrate the economics and contributions of workers...
The form of celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday : A street parade to exhibit to the public " the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations, followed by a festival for the workers and their families".

That means we now have a day 'free from labor', right ?  Then, how is it that farm folks, horse folks, and the like must work on Labor Day? Because animals, plants and the rest Still need care- during holidays, special occasions and well, just all year long.
Ahhh well, such is our choice of vocation, I suppose.

As most of you already know, we have chickens on the farm... not just "a few" chickens but to me, now, a LOT of chickens. I bought 15-day old chicks due to a chick website offering a ''Great Deal'' on all hen chicks- provided one bought at least 15 of them. Figuring this would end up with me having around 10 surviving chicks (the inevitable "chick loss" syndrome), I ordered my chicks in July. Well, they ALL have prospered and are eating like small ponies at this point. Chicks are always fun to have around, but since having 15 at one time, I have come to discover 'chicken herding' is Tough!

One evening last week, I chose to put the new pullets outside in the sunshine for the day. I caught all 15, much to their dismay, and placed them in a plastic container while I moved their wire pen (actually a puppy pen) outside. I had it all set up- even had a sheet creating shade for them when the sun began to go down a little. (that end of our barn is towards the west...) When it was time to bring them back into their stall for the evening, I had a problem. How was I going to catch all 15 without their squeezing their little-feathered selves out of the wire ? It didn't go well...  three got loose and with only 6-7 safely in the plastic container, I was at a loss as to how to get the rest into the barn and then into the stall. Luckily, a friend stopped in to help with horse chores and she helped. Soon all 15 little traumatized hens-to-be were safely in their puppy pen for the night.

Whew- we were soaked in sweat but happy to have them all safe again.

The elder hens were fascinated by the peepies. They casually strolled past, checking the new gals out carefully, but pretending to be finding bugs to eat.....

"A working student & her ''cock"

There's a great person here who has been helping and learning since this past March. She's come a long way and is becoming a confident horsewoman. Since R.C. has become a wonderful (almost mature ) rooster, she'd been telling me about the roosters that showed up at her house. First, there were three, then just one, and she was trying to make friends with him slowly. It took some time, but one afternoon, she sent me an email letting me know that she had caught him!

That was superb news as this had been going on for a few weeks already. We kept trying to figure out what breed he was... I'd find photos of roosters that sort of looked like he did from the one picture she had sent me, and she'd send me pictures of other chicken breeds. (can you tell I am a rank beginner in the world of Chickens?) We never could decide for SURE.

One day this past week, a car drove into our lane, and parked. It was the rooster gal and I couldn't figure out why she'd come to visit .
It wasn't her day to help out or anything....
She gets out of her vehicle, telling me she brought a visitor for me to meet.
>?????<
TShe told me that she'd taken her cock for a drive and figured she would bring him out for a visit at our farm.
So, she lifts this Beautiful rooster out from the back of her wagon, for me to see. Lo'and behold - this cock was a true Black Copper Marans- right down to his feathered legs !
He is a very lovely fellow, and to this day ,
 we tease her about
how she brought her cock to WoodFinn to visit.

"Daisy Lays An Egg !"

Our lavender chickens- Daisy, Lilly & Rooster Cogburn will be a year old this coming February. They have grown to be simply beautiful chickens- and I can see why some people see them as "lavender" in color.... Ever so faintly, when they are in the sunshine, they do turn into light lavender. I love these three chickens, and was anxious to have them laying eggs .... those eggs would be fertile and Pure bred ' Lavender' Orpingtons !

Below is Lilly, our Pet Chicken, being shy.....

One morning, oddly enough, Daisy- who is RC's best pal- wanted to come back into the barn alone. Weird, I thought, but again- chickens are not the most intelligent of creatures here. I let her in thru the gate and she just wandered around aimlessly. If a hen can do that.....
After a bit, I sent her back outside and when I was all done in the barn, left to go get something cool to drink.
That evening, I walked back to the barn, to see how things were going and the same gal who caught herself a rooster told me that there was a
big surprise in the tack room for me.
It was an EGG ! A very dark
colored small egg. Below, from left to right, is a large sized Orpington egg, then in front is a small-ish/ medium Wyandotte egg, and on the right side-
is
Daisy's First Egg !

We are very proud of her, and that leaves Lilly, our official Pet Chicken, to begin laying. Now, Lilly doesn't see herself as a chicken, but a funny, short human in feathers. She loves to follow along while we get barn things done, runs to us if one of those other horrid hens dare to chase her, and adores sitting on laps as well. (I even bought her a chicken diaper that she abhors wearing) We wonder if she actually WILL lay eggs because of her terrible start in life. Lilly almost died when she was small, and I nursed her back to health, thinking that she may not even be able to walk. Walk, she does now- she runs too! She can fly some but like all 'fat farm hens' she's not real good at it. But to be a hen who lays eggs ? Yeah, that might be something she'll not ever do. Heck, I can't convince her that to be outside for a day is smart. Ever see a hen pining to come back inside ?   That would be our Lilly.
So perhaps next spring, Daisy will go broody and hatch out some purebred Lavender chicks for us to enjoy !

Catch Ups

Its been a little while since the last post- sorry !
One of our Percheron mares had a 'discussion' over a fenceline with another one- and she ended up getting some pretty nasty scratches on her chest from it. Pics below....
When we first found them, we were mystified as to how she'd gotten them. She is turned out alone, new fencing that is safe, and well, I simply could not find a reason my mare had big scratches on her left chest / front leg.

I took a walk and ' rode fence' to see if I could find some place that she might have scratched herself.  There was one place inbetween posts where the top of the fencing was bent over, and a bit of black hair on it.  Ah ha- mystery solved.

She's feeling much better now and enjoys the extra attention-  heal fast, my little bouncy mare !

'What a great day, or how we finally had some nice weather.

7.25.12

Today was great, weather-wise. One of our Working Students came over to help with morning chores, and to have a riding lesson that she has earned. She and her pal, BoJangles got to go for a ride around the farm. Sam said she realizes why people want to ride for Hours.... BoJangles didn't think that a wise move at all.

RC and Daisy made out just fine being chickens in the hen house overnight, instead of living in the barn. Tonight however, they did NOT want to go there again, so Dani and I had to capture them.
The 15 little peepies are all doing Great .

This evening Sadie & I went for our walk down the road a ways. She got to meet BICYCLES !!!  For the most part , she was scared of them, but that waggy tail was going like mad. Took some neat shots of the sun reflecting on "our creek' too.  Enjoy !

More Chickens ?????

Yes, more chickens and they are so small, three will fit in the palm of one's hand. Day old chicks- 15 of them and supposed to be all hens. There are some different breeds of brown egg layers, and as they mature , I'm sure we'll be able to figure out the breeds !

'Rooster Cogburn' and the love of his life, Daisy, have been relegated to the hen house.... as of this evening. They were both scared being young chickens in with older hens, but it won't be long until they're all pals.
( I HOPE !!!!)  He's gotten to be quite stunning as has Daisy. Full tail feathers on his lavender grey butt, and a big red comb- Daisy thinks him the 'looker'... until he starts doing the " Are you horny "  dance.  She then just walks away from him. Its tough being a young rooster.

We have chicks, as I mentioned above. The deal was just to good to ignore. Order 15 random breeds of brown egg laying chicks and the shipping was cheap ( no pun intended). They got here this morning and I brought them home from the Post Office around 12:30 or so. They were all happy to see there was breakfast AND something to drink in their little pen. For now, they'll live in a corner of one of the empty stalls in the barn, with a red heat lamp in a corner if they need it. Food, water, heat, and places to scratch around in - and one has happy chickens. Now to pray they ALL make it. I get so attached to the animals around here that when one dies, it breaks my heart.

Below are a few photos of them from this afternoon, plus some of the farm on a summer evening. I wish I could add the sound of crickets singing, and the wind blowing thorough the Hemlocks at the barn... but I'd have to figure out how to add a video and THAT is not understood yet.

This little gal was sleeping....

HOTTTTTT !!!!

7.7.12

Oh my gawd, it is SO Hot outside !  105 here at almost 3 PM.  These past two weeks Mother Nature has been fooling around with her thermostat here in s.central Pennsylvania. It has been over 90 degrees for quite a few days in a row and today is the worst. High heat, HIGH humidity and everyone outside is dealing with this alright. We, humans, however, are inside where the AC has been working overtime for at least a week.

It is so hot , even the flies aren't bugging the horses much... our grass is 'crunchy' and is drying up, thanks to incredible heat and not enough rain.  Tomorrow, Sunday- we're due to have this massive heatwave start breaking up . And it cannot happen fast enough. I went to the barn to check on horses a few minutes ago, and there were small sparrows getting a much needed drink from the chicken waterer I have sitting outside of the tack room door. I know it's warm by now but still it's liquid.  It has been re-filled with cooler water....

Prayers for those who are in the midst of the forest fires out west, and those in the Texas areas that are once Again in a severe drought.....

Come on September !!!

No New Boarders ( 7.3.12)

It seems that the gal who 'was' going to bring her two geldings here to board has changed her mind.  < sigh>
So now, we have two stalls available for someone else's horses.

If anyone reading knows someone local to our area, who is looking for a great place to board their horse or horses,
please ask them to contact me ?

Summertime !

Welcome to Summer in south central Pennsylvania where the weather is sometimes rainy, stormy, humid, terribly hot or like today : Lovely.
We have a nice breeze blowing to help cool animals and humans off , bright, hot sunshine, but not TO terribly stiffling humidity. Its what I'd call a "nice" early July day .
( and I Hate summertime weather)

Our flowers are blooming, the pastures are grassy and not TO many flys around.
(well, most horse folks have WAY to many around their farm) are not to horrid- YET.

Hosta blooms below:

A 'weed' but this one sees herself as a true Queen....
This Queen Anne's Lace is blooming in my rock garden !
